 This past holiday weekend, my mom, the avid gardener she is, took to our budding garden. Amidst the floral explosion of pink, magenta, purple, and green stood an outlier: our weeping birch tree. Normally at this time of year, our weeping birch is in full bloom, so the juxtaposition of this barren tree with the flourishing surroundings was truly a sight for sore eyes. My mother, in addition to being an eager gardener, is also a determined solution seeker. She immediately went to the largest database of information: the Internet. She posed a straightforward question: why did our weeping willow lose all its leaves? This question, seemingly easy to answer, only yielded information in how to determine whether our weeping birch was alive and thus did not provide an answer relevant to mother’s inquiry. So to all those reading this with either a wealth of botanical knowledge or a keen green thumb, do you know why our weeping birch is losing all its leaves? Does it have to do with the weather? Upon a search of "weeping birch is losing all its leaves" online, several possibilities include: aphids or spider mites, lack of nourishment, wind damage, or cankers (see: http://www.growsonyou.com/question/show/9562-why-is-my-willow-tree-losing-it-s-leaves-in-june). Have you had a local tree nursery or landscaper check out the condition?

Could be several causes - not easy to determine without examining the tree and site and knowing the history of the plant.

I have a mini weeping birch for about 7 or 8 yrs. Every yr in late july the leaves start to fall, until all gone by end of Aug. I treat the tree every yr in spring with baryer bug tree treatment. I have fertilized the tree. first few yrs, I though it's dead, but every sprin git comes back so full and healthy, and continues to grow. I think its the heat?? not the bugs. The likely reason for total leaf drop is water. The Young's Weeping Birch is a heavy drinker. Even normal amounts of rain (using the upper mid-west as typical) is not enough. It likes 2 hours of hose watering each week. If the leaf drop began in a localized area of the tree and then spread, it is likely the Bronze Bircvh Borer. Check the uppersides of major horizontal limbs for a "heart" shaped contour. This is a good indication. Retail insect contrrol is okay, but the good stuff is available only with a federal license and so you must find an arborist (big tree cutting companies usually have one). This chemical is applied as a "soil drench" in mid-April. Finally, the fact that this tree does not have longer branches tells me that it has been stressed for some time.
