  • Raise your threshold for stress, so that setbacks won't bother you in the way they do now...
  • Be more creative, have more "great, big ideas", learn faster (and remember what you learned)...

By Janice Dru-Bennett

Starting off the month with announcements on what's trending in the Currnt "Global Work-From-Home" expert panel, Visionary's upcoming events (including the Princeton Tigers Arranged Meetings model that will be shared on November 4th aligning with Princeton University's first Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference: Engage 2020. Finally, plans are coming together for the first Rhode Island celebration of Women's Entrepreneurship Day on November 19th!
Facilitating "The Global Work-from-Home Experience: Trends, Tools and Best Practices" Currnt expert panel, we will also publish a digital report on this past week's interactions, with these summary insights:

  1. Various trends to explore during the work-from-home era include creating work-life balance among remote workers, how to improve networking and trusted relationships.
  2. Innovative technology such as AI could help make the remote office environment more natural, and understanding that people work differently with different digital backgrounds and experiences.
  3. Subjects of inclusivity, equality, and discrimination are also relevant topics, considering people who are in blue collar vs. white collar jobs and impact on DEI as it relates to remote work.
  4. Additional trends include "real" changes to productivity, age differences, how we interact with technology, remote meeting effectiveness, mental/emotional balance, effect on teamwork, creativity, etc.

Building Trusted Relationships While WFH
Trust is an essential ingredient of any good working relation. Many elements of trust building and maintaining are tied into all sorts of work and social rituals like meetings, coffee, social drinks/gathering.
- Bart Groenewoud

Well-being initiatives with a remote workforce
Well-being in the workplace is increasingly recognised as being of key strategic importance for a successful business. But, it is increasingly difficult for leaders to protect and promote employee wellbeing.
- Joanne Roxburgh

Bridging the gap between digital generations
Younger generations can be considered digital natives: they’ve never known a world that was not connected and they use all devices with intuitive ease. How do bridge the gap for inclusivity and productivity?
- Bart Groenewoud

- CIOs

Why hasn't there been a blog post for so many years?

10/17/2020

By Janice Dru-Bennett

Recently I've been reading the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, recommended through the Catalyst Galaxy (a network of people who are catalysts started by Tracey Lovejoy and Shannon Lucas, co-authors of the book Move Fast. Break Shit. Burn Out. The Catalyst's Guide to Working Well just released this month)! These are my referral links, including through the Amazon Affiliate Program, where I might be rewarded if you purchase from the trackable links used within this blog.

As readers may have noticed, Inkwhy hasn't had blog posts for years -- the last two posts were in March 2017 and March 2015. Part of this is my personal story. When Inkwhy started in 2011, I was working full-time in financial services marketing and we were building software to help businesses grow and share knowledge. Since then, we've pivoted from building software to recommending software, services, and solutions to help business owners, startup founders, and nonprofit organization leaders grow effectively. It's difficult to maintain a "side hustle" while also focusing on a full-time job and career in marketing. No excuses though, and I'll refer to my 2015 article on "Priorities, Plans, and Directions, Oh My!" For years, I've focused time on various aspects of growing skills in Marketing and contributing as a senior leader in roles to build the Marketing departments for mid-sized to large, local, and global companies and organizations. I have been the proverbial "shoemaker with holes in my shoes" without dedicating the time to setting up the systems and habits to consistently grow my own startup business, Inkwhy.

2020 is the year of transition, to reflect on WHY I haven't dedicated the time to write blog posts regularly that would drive traffic to my website and to put INK to paper, figuratively speaking. INKWHY has tremendous potential to help many other businesses and organizations grow. As I start applying the Atomic Habits to get 1% better every day, finding time to write more will be one of these habits. For those who are personally connected with me, I've also started a daily habit starting on July 4th this year, where I've highlighted someone different in my network (as well as a few who I'd like to add to my network) who I see making a positive impact. Every day, I've encouraged my network across social media platforms to follow the featured person across all their social media networks with the hashtags #Daily4, #Daily5, and #Daily6 as well as relevant keywords that my network -- building deeper connections on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube. You can also check out my first 2020 YouTube video from this evening!

Shortly after I make this post, I'll also put up my daily social media posts after saying goodnight to the boys in the house, and look forward to building my personal skill sets around writing blog posts, creating videos on YouTube (and going live too), and setting better habits! Hope you will join me in my journey to rebuild Inkwhy in 2020, consider joining our team, and start by creating your own free digital business card as well as checking out my InkwhyCard below! I'd be happy to help you jump-start your personal branding and growth this year too.

How Can I Find the Best Mattress?

3/14/2017

By Guest Blogger: Frank Apodaca

Waking up each morning with aches and pains, or feeling if you haven’t slept at all, may be attributed to your mattress. Old mattresses, poor mattress quality, or even just the wrong surface comfort level can all cause unnecessary issues with a good night’s rest. And this can be problematic to both your mental, and physical health.
Picture

If I just described you, then it’s time to take a good, long hard look at how to get this problem solved. You may already be telling yourself that walking into the nearest mattress retailer will take care of this problem, but I’m here today to address that very thought process. You would expect to find a decent amount of mattress brands and qualities to choose from, but due to the influx in online shopping you’ll discover very quickly that you may need to expand your research elsewhere to find exactly what you needed: Online.

For starters, there are very few choices to even consider on a showroom floor, plus you may end up dealing with ‘middleman markup’ if your budget is a purchasing constraint.  The issues I found online surrounded a plethora of vocabulary that may leave an everyday mattress shopper confused. Words like viscoelastic, cooling gel, open-celled memory foam, hybrid spring coils, assaults the senses on practically every website. What happened to the words pillow top, firm, and soft?

This confusion may drive you back to the safety of the store, but before you make that decision, I’m here to help break it down so you can find the best mattress no matter how you decide to shop. When on the market for a mattress investment, ask yourself the following questions:

What Can I Afford?
The first thing to consider is cost. What are you willing to spend? I assure you that even though this is an investment, you should be able to find something within a reasonable budget range. Average prices of a quality queen sized mattress is currently going to run you around $900 - $2300 depending on the materials you opt for, and I promise you can find what you need for the price you expect if you take the time to shop around.

Online retailers usually offer their mattresses for less due to the fact they leave out the retail and commissioned markups that occur when shopping in-store. Keep your eye on sales as well once you know what you want; in order to stay competitive many brand names will drastically reduce prices to keep their products on the market.

What is Considered Comfortable to Me?
This is the whole reason why you are shopping in the first place. Consider your sleep position and whether you prefer a firm, or more soft top. Side sleepers generally prefer a softer mattress that help keep their spine aligned while they sleep without causing pressure points along the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to help support the natural curves of the spine without allowing naturally heavy areas of the body to sink and create misalignment.

It doesn’t hurt to try out a few mattresses on a showroom floor just to get an idea about your initial comfort levels. I personally like to see and feel what I’m about to purchase, although it’s important not to rule out the many options you may have online as well.

What Sort of Mattress Do I Need for My Bed?
Make sure you take into account what kind of bed you have. Everything from size to mattress platforms can affect your choices. This is especially true if you have anything unusual like a retractable bed, or daybed as your mattress choices may be more limited.

What Warranties Do My Choices Come With?
This is a big deal. Mattresses, especially those new on the market without any reviews of how they last through the years, can carry defects that takes time to show. Since a mattress is a rather large purchase dealing with both comfort and sleep health, you want to make sure you are covered if your quilt top begins to unravel, or you suddenly find yourself in a sinkhole after a year of ownership.

Most companies offer at least a 10-year warranty that covers manufacturing defects. Some of these are prorated, some are not, so make sure to do your homework in advance. If you are unsure of what these terms mean, remember that anything prorated means you may have to cover some of the cost, whereas a non-prorated warranty leaves the cost up to the company.

There are many online sites that offer unbiased mattress reviews and snap shots of mattress comparisons. One of the most helpful sites to get you started on your mattress search providing both pros and cons, as well as general rating comparisons, can be found at The Sleep Judge.

Is a Sleep Trial Available?
With all the online choices you probably don’t want to limit yourself to just what is offered on the showroom floor. Plus, by shopping online you can often cut out the middleman and save yourself a bunch of money. Due to the rise in online shopping, many companies offer sleep-trials. These are periods of time (usually between 30 and 200 days) that allow you to sleep upon the product and decide if it is the right one for you. Occasionally they are risk-free and require nothing but a credit check, but almost all of them allow you to return the product within the time frame, no questions asked, for a full refund.
